Project Brief

We provided civil and structural design services for this new, standalone Health & Wellbeing Hub within the hospital grounds. Opened for the NHS’s 75th anniversary, the multi-purpose centre supports hospital colleagues with workshops, classes, counselling, complementary therapies and relaxation, and a gym. Awarded as a Design & Build contract via the NHS Shared Business Services Framework, the original design team was retained by the contractor.

Solution

Early stakeholder engagement helped focus outcomes on the end users’ needs and adapt the site delivery to suit the Trust’s requirements.
We designed the traditional pad foundations and superstructure for this single-storey, steel-framed building, coordinating our structural design with the steel fabricator’s details and the key architectural requirements. Our slab edge details create a smooth transition at the base of the fully glazed curtain walling sections. Cantilevered canopies over glazed areas pick up the architect’s perimeter bulkhead detail. We coordinated wind post locations, base/head fixing details and masonry restraints with tie details at movement joint positions. We designed the external levels and provided detailed build-ups for all external works including paths, landscaping and base slabs for the bicycle store and condenser units.
We adapted our drainage strategy to integrate with a new, adjacent drainage masterplan prepared by others which included creating a fresh water pumping station. We implemented the use of a filter/attenuation trench within our surface water scheme, avoiding costly sub-surface storage and offering an environmentally- friendly solution.
Using BIM allowed integrated 3D models to be uploaded and enhanced accurate coordination within the team’s Revit environment.
