Project Brief
Adept provided civil and structural engineering services for the Goodwin Foundry Extension. The extension was required to house a foundry reclamation system and a new shakeout pit. This included the design of an enclosed steel frame and concrete foundations. Additionally, a full assessment was needed to identify any elements to the adjoining existing building that required strengthening to accommodate the extension.
Solution
We remained mindful of working on a live, heavy industrial site throughout the project, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols while coordinating with other ongoing operations. The design of the additional building to accommodated a foundry reclamation system and a new shake-out pit, which forms an adjoining extension to an existing structure that already houses a large pit.
The shake-out pit is a recessed area where castings are removed from their sand moulds using vibration or agitation to separate the metal parts from the mould material. Following a comprehensive site
survey, we produced detailed drawings, reinforcement details and connection designs.
Our site inspections and review of existing information enabled us to recommend which structural elements required strengthening and, where necessary, redesigning. We then provided updated drawings and a calculation package aligned with the ‘as-built’ information. To support coordination of the pile design, we also carried out the necessary dynamic analysis for the large machinery present on site and
liaised with the specialist contractor to ensure the safest, most cost effective solution for the client.
