Project Brief

Adept were appointed by Dome Technology, Idaho to provide UK based consulting engineering services. The project enabled the transformation of a 4,000MW facility to a co-generational plant during this coal to biomass conversion.

Solution

Acting on behalf of Dome Technology, Adept provided director led involvement at site meetings and examined Dome Technology’s engineering solutions to ensure compliance with UK design standards. Dome Technology solutions were designed to store 500,000m3 of biomass pellets by constructing four 63m diameter x 52.3m high domes and under each pair of domes 5m wide by 4m deep tunnels which run under the domes. The construction of the domes was achieved through the application of air form technology that utilises an inflated PVC membrane permanent shutter which is sprayed internally with shotcrete.

Adept were consulted throughout all aspects of the build. Engineering designs produced by Dome Technology were reviewed thoroughly and the return of any required technical advice was provided in a timely manner. Close liaison with the U.S. based engineering and construction team was achieved through the creation of clear lines of dialogue which were maintained throughout the build. Feedback from Dome Technology recognised the efforts of Adepts engineers to neutralise barriers which existed due to differences in the cross continental standards and procedures. Adept received much positive feedback from the client not only with regard to their professionalism but equally, engineering expertise and implementation of complimentary techniques such as laser point cloud modelling which ensured that the contractual obligations of the client were met.

Adept’s involvement with this project has further widened the scope of their extensive and varied engineering experience.
