Project Brief
Adept was appointed to deliver full civil and structural engineering services for Siemens Mobility’s new Bogie Assembly & Service Centre in Goole. This state-of-the-art facility, spanning approximately 13,500 sq m on 1.5 hectares of cleared land, will enable Siemens to expand its capacity for assembling and refurbishing rail bogies and wheelsets to meet growing industry demand.
Solution
Our responsibilities included the design and detailing of foundations and a 30 sq m reinforced slab, in addition to coordinating elements of the superstructure steel frame. We also designed external works such as yard pavements, car parking, and a comprehensive drainage strategy.
The design needed to take into account the significant loadings from bogie machine raised rails, overhead gantry and field cranes used to move heavy equipment. To verify ground conditions, we coordinated geo-environmental surveys and borehole analyses, recommending a lime/cement stabilisation treatment.
We used our extensive ground slab expertise to develop a strategically reinforced slab that allowed for an economical thickness, reducing the project’s carbon footprint. Our team designed numerous underground service and machine pits within the ground slab, collaborating closely with the architect and specialist suppliers to meet critical requirements. This included crane base foundations within the slab zone, coordinated around slab pits and process flow layouts.
Civil works encompassed hardstanding, drainage and access roads, and a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) to manage stormwater.
All design work was completed using Autodesk Revit, ensuring seamless integration with the architect and MEP engineer.
