South Yorkshire Institute of Technology – finalist for the 2026 Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards

We are placed to announce The South Yorkshire Institute of Technology (SYIoT) at Barnsley College has been selected as a finalist for the 2026 Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards.

Opened in 2025, the £15m transformation of a 93‑year‑old Art Deco building has created a world‑class hub for STEM‑based further education, supporting both young people and adults to fulfil their potential.
SYIoT connects learners with local employers, offering higher technical qualifications, professional training, degree‑level study and higher apprenticeships across engineering, construction and IT, alongside opportunities for adults to reskill or upskill.

The project carefully balances the conservation of the building’s architectural heritage with a technology‑rich internal environment. A holistic design approach has also significantly improved energy efficiency, supporting Barnsley Council’s Zero 45 Decarbonisation Plan.

Being recognised alongside outstanding projects from across the region is a real testament to the collaboration, vision and commitment behind SYIoT. Congratulations to everyone involved.
