It’s full time for Leeds engineering firm on major sport project

Leeds based Adept Civil and Structural Consulting Engineers has completed work on a major new development in Scotland for Sports Direct that houses several of the company’s retail brands, as well as a state-of-the-art gym, all under one roof.

Adept was appointed by construction giant ISG, to provide engineering services and consultancy advice on the internal fit-out of the new mega-unit, which offers more than 180,000 sq ft of retail space over three storeys, on Glasgow’s Auchinlea Way.

The site is now home to an extensive new store for Sports Direct, which is the UK’s largest sports-goods retailer, as well as luxury retailer Flannels, high street brand USC, and an Everlast Fitness Club.  A key feature of the development is that each brand has its own distinct shop front and entrance.

As part of the work, an existing retail unit has been completely reconfigured and extended, with Adept designing and overseeing the assembly of the new structure’s substantial 450-tonne steel frame. The circa £5million contract has been overseen by ISG.

Andrew Spencer, from Adept, said: “This has been a significant project to work on and one of our first in Scotland. The building features a striking design with a gullwing roof structure, extensive glazing and distinctive modern façade.

“The vast steel frame is supported at one end on cantilevered reinforced concrete ground beams over the existing foundations and there’s an extensive first floor timber deck mezzanine that has been designed so it can be removed without having to make any structural changes to the building or its frame, which offers plenty of future flexibility. We’re delighted that work is complete and it’s a great project for Adept to be involved with.”

Alex Scholes, from ISG, commented: “Sports Direct represents one of the UK’s most successful retail roll outs and the company’s focus on creating a house of brands for its new store designs is a key development for the business. The new Glasgow outlet brings a new gym concept, Everlast Fitness Clubs to Scotland, as well as the country’s second ever Flannels store. The completed scheme looks fantastic and is one that ISG is certainly proud to have worked on.”

Adept Consulting Engineers is a registered Approved Body with the Structural Engineers Registration (SER) scheme to review structural design for Scottish Building Regulation compliance for works. This work is carried out in accordance with in-house QA procedures which are reviewed by SER to ensure the work is carried out to a suitably high standard.
